I live in the suburbs. For over 20 years I lived so far out in the forest that it took half an hour to get to town, and if there had been a storm recently I wasn't getting there at all. Two weeks without electricity was not a burden. I miss living in the forest. Anyhow, I live in town now. My husband and I can't afford to live on our own (damn economy) so we live at a woman's house and trade paying some of the bills for a room. So, for the birds.

The last few days the wild birds have started up in the middle of the sub-morning. It is still nearly pitch black and one that sounds like a forest bird starts up. I've never heard this bird before, it is one of the principle "good morning" birds out in the pastures. Now it sings outside my window. Perhaps he can't afford in the forest anymore either. But I digress. When the morning sky turns grey, more birds join it. One of the most notable is the mourning doves.  Then the house birds start to answer. The house birds are a type of grass parakeet called "Bourke" and their pretty voice blends in with the various songs as they try to answer. For several days now I have been greeted with this serenade.

Did I mention I was trying to sleep in? Thank the good lord the crows do, because when they start their raspy cawing the rest of the birds leave.

Are they any kin to Angry Birds? Or did they used to be Angry Birds?

It is spring and as you remember from the forest, spring is when the birds are most noisy, calling for possible mates, or wondering where the Mrs. went. It's a good thing they do not use the dating servicees on the internet, we would certainly miss their joyful singing!!!

I miss hearing the birds. When I lived with my brother we had a big tree outside the house that the birds loved, so I'd hear them every morning when I was going to bed or waking up (I have no sleep schedule). Where I live now I can't really hear them because the tress are farther away for my home, and if I hear anything it's just pigeons. I don't even hear them most days because the people who live next door to me have a kid that cries a lot, and it sounds like a dogs squeezy toy when it cries. Add to that the mother sounds like she's schizophrenic because one minute she's all cooing and gurgling along with the kid, and the next she's shouting at it like it just pooped in her slippers.

I miss the birds.

My favorites are the Robins and Blue Jays, first birds of spring. After every rain you can see them running across the grass snatching up the worms.

I realized one year that half the "Robins" going "hop-hop-hop" in the yard were actually Meadow Larks pretending to be Robins. If you looked at them straight on you could see their "V" on their chest. They gave themselves away when they jumped up on the fence to sing. They have a much more beautiful song than the Robins. After a few weeks their yellow plumage started coming in and the "V" became clear.
